Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal dismisses Paul Scholes' criticism declaring "I don't worry about it"

Louis van Gaal has hit back at Paul Scholes after the Manchester United legend branded his old club's form “miserable" this season.
Scholes spoke out following United's unconvincing 3-1 win over Burnley in midweek, where Van Gaal's side clawed their way to victory after a woeful first-half.

Ancelloti-Ronaldo party not an issue

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that he does not have any problems with Cristiano Ronaldo 's decision to go ahead with his birthday party after his side's 4-0 derby defeat against Atletico Madrid last weekend.

The Portugal international was heavily criticised for not postponing celebrations following Madrid's thrashing at the hands of their city rivals, while some supporters protested outside the training ground after leaked images of the party circulated within social media.

Andy Carroll to miss rest of season

West Ham striker Andy Carroll will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Carroll left West Ham's 0-0 draw with Southampton at St Mary's on Wednesday on crutches, after an innocuous clash which resulted in a torn medial knee ligament.
Sam Allardyce said in his press conference earlier today that the minimum time scale he thought Carroll would be out for was between four and six weeks.
However, the Hammers have now confirmed that their striker will undergo knee surgery, and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Arsene Wenger says Wilshere had a bad photographer

Wilshere was this week pictured holding a Shisha pipe at a London nightclub after going to watch the Super Bowl.

It is not the first time Wilshere has been involved in a smoking controversy but Wenger was guarded in his response but admitted he must show discipline on and off the pitch.

Wenger, who insisted there was no smoking culture at Arsenal. said: “I’ve spoken with him about that [smoking] and he’s not a smoker. He is of course sorry for what has happened.

“It’s down to him to master his life. He had the day off the next day and he went out to watch the Superbowl. When he’s here he has to follow the rules that we dictate here, when he’s out of his job it’s his own responsibility to behave like he wants to behave.

“You must have a good photographer. I don't think there's any more to add on that. I believe his photo has been taken at half past 12 when he watched the Superbowl. I don't know any more of what happened and it's not of a big interest.”

Morocco fined and banned for withdrawing from hosting this year's AFCON

The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) withdrew as hosts for this year's edition because of health and safety concerns surrounding the Ebola virus epidemic
Morocco have been banned from competing in the next two Africa Cup of Nations and fined just under £6.7 million for refusing to stage the 2015 tournament.

The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) stood down as hosts because of health concerns surrounding the outbreak of the Ebola virus in west Africa and the event was subsequently switched to Equatorial Guinea.

However, CAF has dismissed the legitmacy of the late withdrawal and consequently decided to impose a fine of $1,000,000 (£620,000) upon the FRMF, order the organisation to pay an additional £5.9m in compensation, and exclude the Atlas Lions from the 2017 and 2019 African Cup of Nations tournaments.

A CAF statement read: "Morocco had based its request to postpone the tournament by a year on 10th October, 2014, on allegations 'of the highest health risk'.

"Morocco cited the outbreak of the Ebola virus as a case of force majeure in justifying its request for postponement, citing in particular the risk of contamination of its population because of anticipated fans' flows.
"CAF raised objections and inadmissibility of Morocco's request who were obliged to state their position of withdrawal from the organization of the 2015 Orange Africa Cup of Nations by 11 November 2014.

"The Executive Committee considered that, contrary to what the Royal Moroccan Football Federation cited, force majeure cannot be accepted for the benefit of the federation.

"Thus, according to the provisions of Articles 7.1.a, 23.11 and 62 of the Statutes of CAF and in accordance with Article 41 of the Application of the Statutes of CAF regulations and according to Article 92.4 of the competition rules and the terms of the Framework Agreement signed for the Orange AFCON 2015, the CAF Executive Committee decided to suspend the national team of Morocco from the next two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, 2017 and 2019, and to impose on the federation the regulatory fine of $1 million.

"The CAF Executive Committee decided by a separate measure to be borne by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation the sum of eight million and fifty thousand euro in compensation for all material damage sustained by CAF, stakeholders and partners as a result of the decision not to host AFCON 2015."

Arsene Wenger reveals Alexis Sanchez could feature against Tottenham

Alexis Sanchez is demanding to play in the North London derby.
Arsene Wenger has admitted that Sanchez has an outside chance of being involved at White Hart Lane - just 24 hours after ruling him out with his hamstring injury.

But Sanchez, who missed last Sunday’s win over Aston Villa with the same problem, will take part in some training this morning and Wenger admits he wants to play tomorrow.

Gunners boss Wenger admitted: “He wants to play, of course, he's very keen, he feels he can defy the medical people because he is so keen to play that he thinks he can get over strains.
“I don't know yet, I need medical advice on that, and I need as well to see what he can do in training.

Alexis wants to have a go today, but I think he is too short. We will see.”
Danny Welbeck is back in the squad while Jack Wilshere returns to full training next week after his ankle injury.

Canadian University to offer Course on Ronaldo

A Canadian university is offering fans of Cristiano Ronaldo the opportunity to take a course on the Real Madrid star.

The University of British Columbia Okanagan is enrolling for a fourth-year sociology module on Ronaldo due to his popularity and influence on Portuguese and global society.

Luis LM Aguiar, associate professor of sociology in UBC Okanagan’s Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences, said: "Sociology is nothing if not the delving into the processes of structuring identities and experiences and exposing the social forces that push these processes.

"In this case, I'm interested in how Ronaldo has been used to construct several discourses about who he is, what makes him distinct as a footballer, what is his relationship to Portugal, Madeira (his hometown) and indeed Portuguese identity."

During the semester-long course, students will examine the stereotypical image of Ronaldo and the Portuguese diaspora.

"Ronaldo is said to embody features and characteristics of speed, strength, competetiveness, dogged work ethic, discipline, and adaptability," added Aguiar on news.ok.ubc.ca.

"These features are also in a sense 'very Portuguese' since the Portuguese outside the homeland are nothing if not constructed as hard workers, disciplined and determined. Even as a global athlete transcending geographical boundaries, Ronaldo cannot  escape the stereotypical constructions of 'the Portuguese'.

"My two greatest passions are football and critical sociology. A course on Cristiano Ronaldo gives me the opportunity to combine the two.

"While I’m an admirer of Ronaldo, I’m also a sociologist interested in understanding the social and economic forces driving the various constructions of this athlete and what this says about our contemporary values and culture."

Ronaldo is not the first Madrid name to become the subject of higher education. Staffordshire University offered students the chance to take a module in 'David Beckham studies' prior to the former England captain's move from Manchester United to Spain.

Jovetic makes way for Bony

Stevan Jovetic has been dropped from Manchester City’s Champions League squad for the remainder of the season to accommodate new signing Wilfried Bony.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini has opted to include his new £28 million man in a squad limited to 16 foreign players rather than 17 as a punishment for breaching UEFA’s Financial Fair Play restrictions.
Jovetic, a £22 million signing from Fiorentina in 2013, has struggled to overcome a succession of injuries during his time at the Etihad and the Chilean boss is unwilling to risk his fitness ahead of the Premier League champions' last-16 tie against Barcelona.

His future at the club may be in doubt, having dropped further down the pecking order behind Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and now Bony, while Alvaro Negredo was loaned out to Valencia in the summer.

The Citizens were made to submit their squad on Tuesday, but the details have only now been made public by UEFA.

Willy Caballero and defenders Aleksander Kolarov and Bacary Sagna were all candidates to be replaced by the Ivorian striker, however Jovetic’s omission mean they all keep their place in Manuel Pellegrini's squad.

Ghana set up Ivory Coast final

Goals from Jordan Ayew, Wakaso Mubarak and Andre Ayew sealed a comfortable win, but the game was marred by shocking scenes in the stands that caused the game to be suspended.
Tempers flared as Ghana sealed a 3-0 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final win to end fairytale tournament for hosts Equatorial Guinea in Malabo.

Equatorial Guinea, ranked 118th in the world by Fifa, were named as late replacement hosts for Morocco and upset the odds to reach the knockout stages.

They did so again in a controversial quarter-final triumph over Tunisia, but four-time champions Ghana proved too tough an obstacle as emotions reached an unsavoury boiling point in the stands.

Ghana had to do without star striker Asamoah Gyan due to a hip injury but his replacement Jordan Ayew gave them a 42nd-minute lead from the penalty spot after Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper Felipe Ovono fouled Kwesi Appiah.

Mubarak Wakaso doubled the advantage in the closing moment of the first half before Avram Grant's team had to be shielded by police from objects thrown from the crowd as they left the field.

The home players pleaded for calm in the stands before the resumption but they were unable to negotiate a way back into the match as Andre Ayew sealed victory and a final spot against Ivory Coast with his third goal of the tournament.

Chaos descended as the game entered its closing stages.

A delay of more than half an hour came as a further hail of objects were thrown and a large number of supporters fled the stands, gathered behind the advertising hoardings, as a proud night for Equatorial Guinea ended in unfortunate ignominy.

The game had started with Equatorial Guinea looking to impress, semi-final hero Javier Balboa going close before the attacker's free-kick presented captain Emilio Nsue with a chance which he could not convert.

Ghana's players remained calm throughout and were able to celebrate after playing out a token three minutes upon the game's resumption to seal their final place and book a date with Ivory Coast in what promises to be a mouth-watering final.

Alexis Sanchez to miss North London Derby

Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez has been ruled out of Saturday's north London derby.
The Chilean missed last weekend's crushing win over Aston Villa with a hamstring strain but was expected to return at White Hart Lane.
However, Arsene Wenger has confirmed he is not yet ready, with the Gunners' midweek clash against Leicester a more reasonable target for the 26-year-old.
He told the club's official website: "The latest is that Alexis is not ready. He is not far away, the Leicester game is a possibility.
'He is of course very difficult to keep quiet. He is training but it's light training."
Wenger also confirmed Danny Welbeck will be involved after missing the last month with a thigh problem, but Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are still out.
"Welbeck is back in the group. Apart from that we have the same squad available as last week," he added.
The win over Villa coincided with the returns of Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott from injury, with both in line to start again against Tottenham.
Arsenal make the trip to White Hart Lane just one place and two points above Mauricio Pochettino's men in the Premier League table.

Glenn Hoddle to follow Redknapp to leave QPR

GLENN HODDLE last night released a statement to Zapsportz.com following the exit of Harry Redknapp as manager of QPR and his own departure from the club. He had joined Redknapp (pictured together, above) as first team coach last August. This is what Glenn had to say:
“I am a bit shocked and surprised, to tell you the truth. We all know football is a results-orientated businesss but I always felt that given a few more games, Harry could have turned it around down there at the bottom.
“It would have only taken a couple of good results to have achieved that as it is very tight down there.
“But that’s football for you. I have enjoyed coming back into coaching and I thanked Harry for giving me that opportunity to tip my toe back into the coaching arena.
“I have enjoyed every minute. I wished him all the best and I do sincerely hope QPR can stay up. I would love the players to turn it around as I have enjoyed working with them – and hope I have improved them.”

FIFA Presidential aspirant vows to end 'culture of intimidation'

Presidential candidate Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein has called for an end to the "culture of intimidation" within Fifa.
The Jordanian FA president, 39, is one of three challengers to current Fifa president Sepp Blatter for the 29 May election.
Prince Ali says Fifa has discouraged dissent and debate under Blatter's 17-year tenure as president.
"In the past people have taken a principled stand and they have ended up being punished for it," he said.
"I hope things are played fairly and in the right way now."
Fifa has suffered a number of damaging corruption accusations during Blatter's period as president.
Ethics investigator Michael Garcia resigned in December in protest at Fifa's handling of his report into bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in Russia and Qatar.
Prince Ali, who is also vice-president of the Asian Football Confederation and head of the West Asian Football Federation, says Fifa needs to accept that the corruption allegations have damaged the organisation's standing.
"Everybody realises that we need to improve the reputation of Fifa. You need to work from the bottom up, and you need to have a president who serves the sport," he told BBC Sport.
"If I was president, I would take responsibility for the actions that have taken place, and I will do that hopefully in the future."
The member of the Jordanian royal family, who has been on the Fifa executive committee for four years, added that he will resign if Blatter is re-elected.
"I couldn't see myself being on the executive for the next four years, given the circumstances that are," he said.

Harry Redknapp resigns as QPR Coach

Harry Redknapp has resigned as manager of Queens Park Rangers after revealing that knee surgery would stop him from doing his job.
The 67-year-old requires immediate treatment on his knee and believes that by not being able to be on the training ground on a daily basis, someone else should take over the job.
Redknapp leaves Rangers with the club second-bottom of the Championship and without a single point away from home this season.
Les Ferdinand and Chris Ramsey will take charge of QPR on a caretaker basis and will remain in charge until further notice. Kevin Bond and Glenn Hoddle are always involved at the club.
On his departure, Redknapp has thanked the club's staff and the supporters for their support.
He told the club's official website: “I have had such a fantastic time at QPR. I would like to thank the board, the players and all my staff, and especially the supporters who have been absolutely fantastic to me since I arrived at the club for their tremendous support.
“Sadly I need immediate surgery on my knee which is going to stop me from doing my job in the coming weeks. It means I won’t be able to be out on the training pitch every day, and if I can’t give 100 per cent I feel it’s better for someone else to take over the reins.
“My relationship with Tony Fernandes has been one of the highlights of my footballing career and I wish the club every success. I am confident they will survive in the Premier League this year.”
QPR chairman Tony Fernandes has thanked Redknapp for his time at Loftus Road.

LVG Complains-The World wants Manchester United to lose

Louis van Gaal says the whole WORLD wants his Manchester United side to be dumped out of the FA Cup by lowly Cambridge United.
Man United must replay their fourth round tie at Old Trafford after being held to an embarrassing 0-0 draw by the League Two side 11 days ago.
Manager Van Gaal knows all the pressure is on his Red Devils and admitted there is a desire to see them fall flat and follow Chelsea and Manchester City in going out in a major upset at this last-32 stage.
“What I have already said is that everything is against you at Manchester United and everything is in favour of the underdog,” said Van Gaal ahead of Tuesday’s tie.
“People shall not do it consciously but sub-consciously. So that’s our warning for Tuesday.
“But in spite of all the criticism we’ve had, we’re still in the FA Cup and a lot of teams are not.
“So I’m still happy that we can play this match, but we have to win because they are coming with two rows of four and a goalkeeper and dropping in a striker.
“We have to score the first goal, because that’s the most important goal, so it’s not such an easy game.”

West Brom seal Fletcher signing

West Bromwich Albion have signed Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher on a two-and-a-half year deal.
The Scotland international looked set to join West Ham earlier in the January transfer window, but the move broke down on Saturday.
That allowed the Baggies and Tony Pulis to step in, and they secured the deal late on deadline day.
The 31-year-old made 342 appearances for the Red Devils during his time at Old Trafford, and was originally named as Louis van Gaal's vice-captain at the start of this season.
But Michael Carrick's return from injury saw him dropped to "third captain", and he has made just four Premier League starts this season.
He becomes Pulis' second signing at the Hawthorns after Callum McManaman joined form Wigan Athletic.

Chelsea complete Cuadrado deal as Schurrle and Salah leave

Chelsea have completed the signing Fiorentina's Juan Cuadrado.
The Colombian attacker has joined for a fee understood to be in the region of £27million and has penned a four-and-a-half-year contract.
He told the Blues' official website: "I am very happy and thankful for this opportunity I’ve been given.
"This is a great club and honestly it is like a dream to join the Chelsea family and to know that the manager believes in me. I’m happy."
The announcement of Cuadrado's arrival came shortly after Andre Schurrle completed his move to Wolfsburg.
He moves to Stamford Bridge after five-and-a-half years in Italy, having first joined Udinese in 2012 from Colombian outfit Independiente Medellin.
In what is likely to be the biggest deal of deadline day, his fee is only dwarfed this window by Man City's purchase of Wilfried Bony which cost £28million  and adds to the already impressive attacking options at Jose Mourinho's disposal.
The attacking midfielder, capped 37 times by his country, was one of the best performers at last year's World Cup, notching a tournament-high of four assists and one goal in Colombia’s run to the quarter-finals.

Everton sign Aaron Lennon

verton have confirmed the loan signing of Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon.
The pacy winger will join Roberto Martinez's side for the rest of the season as he hunts regular first-team action.
The Spaniard said: “We all know what Aaron will bring to our squad with his experience and know-how, his involvement with England in two World Cups and the landmarks he has set in the Premier League.
“At 27, Aaron will be a really important asset to our squad and he will represent a real boost in terms of attacking options from now to the end of the season. His pace and trickery will fit in well at Goodison.”
The former Leeds man has made just three Premier League starts for Mauricio Pochettino's men this season, falling down the pecking order of wide players at White Hart Lane.
He did feature in all six of Spurs' Europa League group games, but has yet to find the net in 17 appearances in all competitions so far this season.
Everton currently sit 12th in the table after a disappointing campaign thus far.

Henry-I cried when I left Arsenal

Thierry Henry admits he cried when he left Arsenal in 2007 and has revealed that he was initially considered to be Barcelona's fourth-choice striker by Pep Guairdiola.

Henry, who announced his retirement in December, helped guide Arsenal to two Premier League titles and three FA Cup trophies, while he also remains the club’s record scorer with 228 goals.

"I never considered leaving Arsenal." Henry told beIN Sports. "But I was 29 years old and in form, I thought all the guys left and I did not know if Arsene [Wenger] would be staying.

"It was not easy and when I left I cried. I'm not ashamed to say it. I'm a competitor and I had to leave.”

Henry joined Barcelona in a £16 million deal in June 2007 but insists that he had to force his way into Guardiola’s plans.

"When I arrived at Barcelona, Guardiola told me that I was the fourth-choice striker and I would not be starter,” said the Frenchman.

"I accepted the challenge and I fought, and competition makes you increase your level. People talk about luck, but you need to create you own. When you work, you got the reward at the end.”

Henry also revealed the extent of his struggles at Juventus, which prompted his move to Arsenal in 1999 after just 19 appearances for the Serie A club.

"When I arrived at Juventus, there were many problems," said Henry. "The team was not running well. I played under Ancelotti in a 3-5-2, a system where I had trouble fitting in.

"I struggled, even after I started to score. But I left for other reasons because Luciano Moggi [Juventus' then chief managing director] wanted to do business. It was not respectable what he did."

Novak Djokovic is 2015 Australian Open Men's Champion

Novak Djokovic proved too strong for Andy Murray as he won a fifth Australian Open title in a punishing final.
The Serb, ranked number one, came through 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-0 in three hours and 39 minutes.
It was a third win over British number one Murray in a Melbourne final and brought him an eighth Grand Slam title.
Murray, 27, has now won two of the eight Grand Slam finals he has played in, having lost all four in Australia.
"I would like to congratulate Novak - it is a fantastic record and thoroughly deserved," said Murray.
"It is probably my most consistent Grand Slam throughout my career but I just haven't been able to win."
Murray, who underwent back surgery towards the end of 2013 and was playing in his first Grand Slam final since winning Wimbledon earlier that year, added: "I'm closer than I was a few months ago.
I'll try to come back next year and have a slightly different outcome in the final."
The Scot, who will return to fourth in the world rankings on Monday, had chances in each of the first three sets of the final but ultimately lost his way and his temper as Djokovic won 12 of the last 13 games.
Djokovic, a week younger than his opponent, did look vulnerable at times, hurting his hand in a fall and appearing to struggle with an ankle problem early in the second set.
There were some concerned looks to coach Boris Becker in the stands. He stumbled on more than one occasion and required some energy-boosting fluids at a break down in the third set.
Murray later admitted he had been "distracted" by the Serb's apparent physical issues and, just as at the US Open last September, he could not keep pace with Djokovic in the closing stages.
Djokovic had made a blistering start, racing into a 4-1 lead and going 20 minutes before he offered up a first unforced error.
It was to Murray's credit that he twice hauled back breaks to force a tie-break, but a double-fault at 4-2 and a loose volley at 5-5 simply gave Djokovic too many chances.
The four-time champion clinched it when Murray netted a return, before suffering an awkward fall chasing a net cord early in the second that required treatment to his hand.
Murray moved into a 2-0 lead but saw the advantage wiped out when a rejuvenated Djokovic strung together 13 straight points.
Again, Murray fought back, a forehand into the corner making it 4-4, and three break points were saved at 5-5 on the way to a second tie-break.
This time the Scot would not relinquish an advantage, winning a gripping rally to lead 5-2 and converting his third set point.
When Djokovic netted a forehand to drop serve at the start of the third set, Murray appeared to have finally gained the initiative after two-and-a-half hours.
It proved to be his last moment to savour, however. Increasingly frustrated by a resurgent opponent, his second serve slipped from being vulnerable to a liability.

Djokovic was now winning 75% of those points, with Murray screaming "how many times" as his advantage fell away.
The Serb saw off one final moment of danger at break point in game seven, gesturing to coach Becker to become more animated, but he required no assistance.
Murray was a rapidly fading force, double faulting to drop serve at 5-3, and winning just 11 points in a fourth set that disappeared in under half an hour.
Djokovic celebrated by throwing his racquet into the crowd, while a furious Murray smashed his in despair.
"I'm honoured to be standing here as a champion for a fifth time," said the Serb after collecting the trophy from Australia's Roy Emerson, the only man to win six titles.
